By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former UDP Leader Shyne Barrow has issued a statement slamming the last UDP administration for alleged corruption. Ironically that administration was led by his father Dean Barrow who served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2020.
In addition, Shyne has called out current UDP leader Tracy Panton for what he called “hype and hypocrisy.”
“Politics in Belize continues to be less about policy and all about personalities. There are some extremely powerful people in the Alliance for Corruption, who wrote the playbook of how to influence the media and run propaganda campaigns to collapse Government’s or leaders,” Shyne said.
Shyne added that at this time, the “propaganda machine” is focused on the Mira family doing business with the Government of Belize but the previous UDP administration did the exact same thing, allegedly paying out millions to family members for services provided.
“Case in point today’s propaganda machine is focused on the Mira’s doing business with GOB to the tune of millions” yet according to Shyne the previous UDP government in which Dean Barrow served as Minister of Finance allegedly “paid out tens of millions…in legal fees to family members”. Barrow further asserted, “Now I want to be clear, I am not saying there was anything corrupt about GOB hiring the best lawyers even if they happen to be family members of the then PM…it can’t be that the former PM can do it but the Mira’s can’t.” Shyne is insinuating that the current UDP is hollering corruption for Mira but silent on similar practices of the previous UDP Cabinet.
Shyne then called out Panton saying that the public is yet to hear “Tracy and her Alliance condemn previous practices by cabinet.”
Shyne Barrow claims that the then UDP in which Tracy was a member, awarded “half a Billion in Boledo agreements” to a company allegedly connected to PM’s son. “For the record I am not saying there was any illegality in these transactions”, Tracy is the one suggesting that it is wrong for the government to do business with closely connected family members, “Yet she refuses to commit that heaven forbid she should form Government these practices of family members of Ministers making millions in legitimate businesses with GOB will be discontinued,” Barrow explained.
Shyne also said that the current UDP leadership will “never condemn the corruption in the Cabinet they served in. All they will do is hype and propaganda until the current government becomes so unpopular you vote out the white dog and get stuck with the white pig.”
He further called for legislation for UNCAC to break the cycle of corruption.
