By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former Security Supervisor, 39-year-old Merlene Clark of Ladyville, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after pleading guilty to two counts of keeping a firearm without a gun license and one count of keeping ammunition without a license. The charges stem from an incident on September 16, 2022, when police discovered two unlicensed Smith & Wesson firearms and 11 rounds of ammunition in her possession.
Clark, who was initially out on High Court bail, appeared unrepresented in Court #3 this morning, where she changed her plea to guilty just as her trial was set to begin. Senior Magistrate ordered Clark’s remand pending sentencing, allowing her time to present character witnesses.
The offenses carry a minimum prison term of five years, though the Magistrate has discretion to impose a non-custodial sentence depending on the circumstances. Sentencing is scheduled for August 20, 2024.
Clark was prepared for the possibility of remand, arriving at court with a bag of clothes. She had been employed as a Security Supervisor at the time of the incident.
