By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former Prime Minister Dean Barrow is sounding the alarm over what he calls the “monumental tragedy” unfolding within the United Democratic Party (UDP), warning that the current paralysis in the party’s leadership could have lasting consequences for Belize’s democracy.
In a deeply personal interview with 7 News Belize, Barrow revealed that he has made multiple attempts to help the party navigate its internal crisis—especially regarding the repeated delays in holding a National Party Council meeting.
“I’ve tried talking to Alberto and others, urging them to hold the NPC meeting,” Barrow said. “But there’s no movement. It’s like the party is stuck in quicksand.”
Barrow described the situation as more than a political disappointment. “This is not just about the UDP—it’s about the health of our democracy. An opposition must function. Right now, we are failing the country.”
While he refrained from criticizing any specific individuals, his frustration was clear. The former party leader lamented that internal party dynamics and power plays have created a state of paralysis that he believes is damaging not just to the UDP but to Belize.
“To see the party in this condition—it’s painful,” he admitted. “And to know that history will judge us not by our past victories, but by our current inaction, is a burden too heavy to bear.”
The UDP’s unification NPC meeting is tentatively scheduled for next Saturday, but Barrow isn’t optimistic about the outcome. With dwindling public confidence and internal rifts, the question remains: Can the UDP regroup before the next electoral cycle, or has the once-dominant party reached the point of no return?
