By Breaking Belize News Staff: A familiar face to law enforcement, 21-year-old Paul Smith Jr. of La Democracia Village, is once again behind bars—this time facing serious charges after a violent weekend altercation left a man hospitalized.
Smith Jr., who previously walked free from a murder charge in 2024, was arraigned on Wednesday afternoon before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Belize City’s Court #5 for the attempted murder of Tyrone Godoy. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 8, 2025, during what police say was an altercation that ended with Godoy being chopped to the hand and admitted to the hospital.
In court, Smith Jr. was read three indictable charges: attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and grievous harm. Due to the severity of the charges, no plea was taken and no bail offered. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court date on August 6, 2025.
Just two weeks ago, on May 28, 2025, Smith Jr. stood before the same court on charges of escaping from lawful custody while detained in connection with a burglary in La Democracia. He had also recently been granted bail for handling stolen goods.
Smith Jr. is no stranger to serious allegations. In November 2024, he was freed of a murder charge after the prosecution entered a nolle prosequi in the case of Tyreak Dwight August, a 19-year-old who was gunned down in La Democracia in April 2022.
As of now, the motive for Sunday’s chopping incident remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
