By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A group of former employees of Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is demanding payment of severance benefits they say are legally owed, citing delays and lack of a clear response from the company, despite a recent Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruling for another utility company in Belize.
According to a press release issued on March 30, 2026, the group claimed that they submitted a formal request to BEL in February but has yet to receive a substantive reply.
The former employees, many of whom served the company for extended periods, have raised concerns about BEL’s past practice of linking severance payments to pension contributions.
They argue that recent legal developments, including a 2025 ruling by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in favour of former Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) employees, confirm that severance and pension are separate entitlements under Belize law and should not be treated as interchangeable.
The group also expressed frustration over ongoing delays, noting that while BEL acknowledged their request, the matter has been pushed back by more than a month.
In response, the former employees have announced a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, at the Inspiration Center in Belize City, where they intend to address the issue publicly.
Breaking Belize News (BBN) will attempt to reach BEL to get management’s version of the situation and to confirm when can a response to the workers’ letter be expected.
