By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 30-year-old man described by the court as an alleged mental patient has been denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending a psychiatric evaluation after being accused of attacking another man with a metal fork.
The accused, Richard Phillip Cherrington, a resident of La Democracia Village, appeared on Monday before the Chief Magistrate in Court #2. However, the charge against him was not read, nor was a plea taken.
Cherrington is accused of committing aggravated assault upon another man using a dangerous instrument, namely a metal fork. The alleged incident occurred on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
The court was informed that Cherrington had recently appeared before the court on a separate criminal matter, during which a psychiatric evaluation had already been ordered. He had only recently been released on bail in connection with that earlier incident.
Given the circumstances and concerns surrounding his mental state, the Chief Magistrate ordered that Cherrington undergo another psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness to stand trial. As a result, the court refrained from formally reading the charge or taking a plea, as is customary during arraignment.
Cherrington has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until March 26, 2026, when he is expected to return to court pending the outcome of the psychiatric report, which will assist the court in determining his current state of mind and how the matter should proceed.
