Jaguar rescued by Forest Department and the Belize Zoo at a storeroom in Hattieville, was sedated and taken to the Belize Zoo.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Thursday, November 21, the Forest Department and the Belize Zoo announced plans to relocate the young jaguar rescued in Hattieville.

A press release by the Forest Department on Thursday stated that they, along with personnel from the Belize Zoo, quickly responded to a report from a resident of Hattieville in the Belize District about a jaguar that took refuge in a storeroom on his property. The young jaguar, chased by dogs early that morning, ran into the storeroom, and the property owner managed to close the doors, capturing the animal.

Teams from the Forest Department and the Belize Zoo arrived on the scene, sedated the jaguar, and transported it safely to the Belize Zoo facilities. There, the jaguar will undergo a comprehensive health assessment. Plans are in place to relocate the jaguar to an undisclosed area and equip it with a tracking collar to monitor its movements closely.

“The priority of the Forest Department and its partners is to promote a balance between human safety and the well-being of our jaguar population, and we will continue to respond to all reports of jaguar and wildlife issues in rural areas throughout Belize,” the Forest Department said.

“As we continue to celebrate Jaguar Month globally and in Belize under the theme ‘Keep Wildlife in the Wild,’ we will continue to highlight the ecology of this threatened apex predator, which is present throughout Mesoamerica and whose healthy populations continue to thrive in Belize.”

After the jaguar was safely sedated, it was taken to the Belize Zoo.

“We are grateful to Mr. Castillo for acting quickly and in the best interest of everyone’s welfare (both human and animal), as well as to the officers of the Hattieville Police Station for their assistance,” the Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center said.

The Forest Department urges the public to continue reporting incidents involving encounters and other situations with wild animals.
