By Aaron Humes: Meeting this week with Commonwealth Foreign Ministers at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, Francis Fonseca, Belize’s Foreign Minister, provided an update on the ongoing Belize-Guatemala process, highlighting recent tensions along the Sarstoon River and within Belize’s maritime territories.

During his briefing, Minister Fonseca expressed gratitude for the Commonwealth’s recent statement reaffirming support for Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement is seen as a vital endorsement in the face of escalating disputes with Guatemala, particularly in sensitive border areas.

Fonseca joined Prime Minister John Briceño who is expected to address the General Assembly this week as well as meet with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo to seek a reduction of tensions.
