By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a dramatic reversal, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) have overturned the historic suspensions of three Yo Creek United players who were previously banned by the Orange Walk Football Association (OWFA) for alleged racist remarks during a semifinal match against Mi Gente FC. The FFB’s decision comes amid growing scrutiny over procedural fairness and the integrity of the disciplinary process.

The original incident occurred on May 4, 2025, during the first leg of the OWFA 1st Division Closing Championship semifinals. Yo Creek United led 4–2 when the match was abandoned in the 82nd minute after Mi Gente players refused to continue, citing repeated racial slurs directed at their teammate, Mark Bainton. According to the match report, Bainton reported being called a “black monkey” and subjected to other racially charged insults by Yo Creek players Luis Chi, Juan Diaz, and Amilcar Jones.

On May 6, the OWFA issued unprecedented 19-month suspensions to the three players, barring them from all OWFA-sanctioned competitions until January 2027. The ruling, hailed as a milestone in Belizean football’s fight against racism, was accompanied by a strong statement reaffirming OWFA’s zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination. The association also condemned racist behaviour from spectators and warned of lifetime bans for future violations.

Despite being told the decision was not appealable, Yo Creek United swiftly challenged the decision, calling the sanctions “harsh and unfounded.” The club argued that the players were denied due process and that the evidence presented was insufficient. The FFB launched a review and, in a formal letter dated June 17, reversed the suspensions, citing serious procedural flaws and a lack of adherence to the Federation’s Disciplinary & Ethics Code.

“It is important to recognize that the affected players and the club have endured significant hardship, having been prevented from participating in multiple matches during the remainder of the football season, despite the absence of a valid and enforceable rule,” the FFB said.

“Considering the above, the Football Federation of Belize hereby declares the decision made by the Orange Walk Disciplinary Committee to be “Null and Void.” The FFB instructs that the three affected players be reinstated with immediate effect and allowed to resume participation in all sanctioned football activities.

“We trust that the Orange Walk District Association will comply with this directive and take note to ensure that all future disciplinary decisions conform strictly to the FFB’s Disciplinary & Ethics Code and procedural rules,” the FFB stated in its ruling.

Despite the controversy, Yo Creek United went on to win a second consecutive OWFA 1st Division Championship, a triumph the club attributed to their resilience and unity. They are now preparing to compete in the FFB’s National Amateur Interdistrict Championship (NAIC).

The FFB’s decision will surely spark national debate. While some will applaud the FFB for upholding due process, others may fear it may undermine efforts to combat racism in Belizean football. The case has also prompted calls for clearer protocols and better training for match officials and disciplinary bodies.

As the dust settles, the incident remains a watershed moment—one that has exposed both the challenges and the urgency of addressing racism in sport with fairness, transparency, and resolve
