Football Federation leads tribute to accident victims Sidney Montenegro of Sagitun Girlz and her brother David

By Aaron Humes: The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) is in mourning following the tragic loss of siblings Sidney, 21, and David Montenegro, 20, who sadly passed away in a traffic accident this evening, leaving a profound impact on their community. Originally from Costa Rica, the Montenegro siblings found a second home in Belize, where they touched the lives of many with their incredible warmth and vibrant spirits. The siblings were returning to their home in Bella Vista after a day of swimming at the Bladen River when the accident occurred.

Sidney Montenegro, says the FFB is an exceptionally talented football player who made her mark in the sport with her remarkable journey beginning at Rumberas, before joining the Sagitun Girlz in 2023. “Her dedication and talent helped lead the team to victory, and on May 31st, she proudly celebrated winning the Premier Women’s League of Belize (PWLB) championship,an achievement that earned her team the honor of representing Belize in the upcoming UNCAF tournament this July,” noted the Federation.

David, her younger brother, was her biggest supporter and steadfast companion throughout her football journey. He was a familiar face at every match, consistently cheering on Sidney and embodying the essence of sibling love and encouragement. Just a day before their untimely passing, David celebrated a milestone, graduating from Independence High School.

“Sidney’s presence was always marked by love, joy, and a radiant smile. She brought people together with her warm hugs and kind heart. Always at her side was her younger brother, David, her greatest supporter and constant companion. A familiar face at every match, David embodied the kind of sibling bond that uplifts and inspires. On June 7th, just one day before their passing, David graduated from Independence High School, a moment filled with pride and promise,” the FFB said.

The Federation honors the memory of Sidney and David Montenegro and extends condolences to their family.
