By Zoila Palma: Latest data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reveals a continuing upward trend in the cost of living, with significant price increases recorded for several essential food items between February 2025 and February 2026.
The most dramatic surge was seen in the price of stew pork, which jumped by 15.7%, rising from $6.99 to $8.09 per pound. Other red meats also became notably more expensive, as beef steak rose by 8.7% to reach $10.89 per pound, and ground beef increased by 5.1% to reach $7.94.
Seafood and poultry lovers are also feeling the pinch at the market.
The average price for a pound of whole fish climbed by 7.9% over the last year, now averaging $9.73. Similarly, turkey prices saw a 6.1% increase, moving from $5.79 to $6.15 per pound.
In addition, the price of flour tortillas (pack of 5) now costs $2.57, representing a 4.1% increase from the previous year. Hotdog bread also saw a modest rise of 1.1%, bringing the average price for a pack of eight to $2.99.
The poultry sector presented a mixed bag for consumers.
While chicken wings and chicken legs saw increases of 2.3% and 0.9% respectively, there was slight relief in other cuts. The price of chicken breast actually decreased by 1.2%, dropping to an average of $4.76 per pound, and chicken cuts saw a marginal dip of 0.3%.
Whole chicken remained relatively stable with a minor 0.8% increase.
