By Zoila Palma:  The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), has commenced a series of regional coconut trainings in Belize as part of the global FAO project FVC/GLO/184/MUL- Scaling the Implementation of the One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) Initiative.

The Ministry of Agriculture noted that the program supports green agricultural development by helping countries prioritize and sustainably develop a high-potential value chain. In Belize, coconuts have been identified as the priority commodity.

These trainings represent the first of three regional capacity-building sessions designed to empower farmers, producer groups, and technical personnel with practical knowledge and skills in good agricultural practices, crop management, pest and disease surveillance, and sustainable production methods specific to coconuts.

The sessions are expected to strengthen production systems, enhance resilience to threats affecting coconut cultivation, and improve the quality and consistency of supply.

“With global demand for coconut and coconut-derived products continuing to rise, Belize stands to benefit from strengthened technical capacity and greater market competitiveness. By promoting improved agronomic practices and knowledge exchange among stakeholders, the initiative seeks to increase productivity, generate new livelihood opportunities, and promote climate-resilient agricultural growth,” the Ministry noted.

FAO’s OCOP initiative engages with national and regional partners to accelerate sustainable agricultural transformation, and CARDI’s leadership in delivering these trainings reflects the Institute’s long-standing commitment to supporting agricultural innovation and farmer development in the Caribbean.
