FLUP 2025 (Festa Litéraria das Periferias, Rio de Janeiro)

[Many thanks to Anderson Tepper for bringing this array of magnificent events to our attention—a true feast!]  The 15th edition of Flup: A Festa Litéraria das Periferias [FLUP: The Literary Festival of the Peripheries] will take place between November 19th and 23rd and November 27th and 30th, 2025. Organized around the theme “Ideias para Reencantar o Mundo: Escrevivências, Sonhos e Batidões” [Ideas to Re-enchant the World: Life/Writings, Dreams, and Beats] takes place at the Madureira Viaduct, CUFA, and Zê Êne (located at 211 Carvalho de Souza Street, Madureira, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

This cultural festival includes the opening of the exhibition “Códigos Negros” [Black Codes] on the life, work, and legacy of the anti-colonial and anti-racist thinker and activist Frantz Fanon; a conversation between honored authors and activists Conceição Evaristo and Mireille Fanon Mendès-France; a conversation between Brazilian thinker Leda Maria Martins and  Caribbean choreographer Léna Blou (Guadeloupe) on creative dance and bodily knowledge; and many other events featuring Caribbean writers, such as Patrick Chamoiseau (Martinique) and Fabienne Kanor (Étonnants Voyageurs); the list of exciting events is endless.

The theme of this edition is “Ideas to Re-enchant the World: Escrevivências, Dreams, and Beats,” a celebration of the revolutionary political, artistic, musical, and poetic legacy of the Caribbean and its profound influence on the African diaspora, especially in Brazil, with its soundsystem culture.

The honored author is Conceição Evaristo, one of Brazil’s most influential writers, whose concept of “Escrevivências” [a word that fuses “writing” with “lived experiences”] has transformed the way we understand and narrate the experiences of Black women and marginalized communities. Her work, deeply rooted in the oral traditions of the African diaspora, resonates with the resilience of the mangrove swamp—its ability to thrive in challenging conditions, to create life where it seems impossible.
