By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Due to the constant rains and a flooded campus, Belize City’s Pallotti High School is conducting classes online on Friday, September 6.
“Due to inclement weather, classes today, Friday, September 6th, 2024, will be done asynchronously via Google Classroom. Stay safe,” the Belize City all-girls high school said early on Friday.
Sister Clara, Provincial Superior of the Pallottine nuns who own and manage the school, said the school grounds and lower classrooms get flooded whenever it rains torrentially. She said the waterways have been blocked and the school, which is used as a hurricane shelter by the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), needs help in resolving the problem.
“Every year we have this situation with the flood and I’ve been asking the public at large to assist us, any engineer who can come and guide us, to show us what we need to do to be able to take out the water from the grounds,” Sr. Clara told Breaking Belize News.
Sr. Clara said when the highway was restructured, the outlets that send the water to the canal on Princess Margaret Drive and the river were blocked.
“It doesn’t matter how many drains we dig, they will have to help to clear the outlet so the water can connect to the canal and the river,” Sr. Clara said.

Sr. Clara said the school has pumps on campus, but they need servicing because they’ve been damaged by the constant rains. However, the pumps can’t do much because the campus is swamped.
This is the second time this school year Pallotti has had to call off on-campus classes. The school was forced to cancel opening day classes on Monday, August 26, because of the same problem.
Meanwhile, across Belize City, St. Catherine Academy is conducting hybrid classes on Friday.
“Parents, we encourage you to monitor the weather and decide if it is safe for your child to physically attend classes tomorrow,” SCA said on Friday. “Online classes are an option if the tropical system makes it difficult or unsafe for students to reach the campus.”
SCA said the school would be “open for classes as usual”.
Several other schools countrywide have also called classes off for the day.
The rains have also disrupted other services and made getting to work difficult for many workers.
