By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police in Orange Walk are investigating a shooting incident after a 22 year old fisherman reported that several armed men opened fire on his pickup truck near Trinidad Village.
According to police information, the fisherman had gone on a fishing trip with two friends in a remote river area near Trinidad Village early on September 17.
He reportedly left his friends near the river and drove back toward the village to buy beer and additional fishing line.
While travelling along a dirt road near cane fields, he said his headlights illuminated a man dressed in a blue uniform resembling that of a Customs officer.
The fisherman told police he then saw two additional men wearing camouflage clothing resembling police uniforms, one of whom was holding a black rifle.
He said none of the men signalled him to stop or spoke to him, and because the area was dark and isolated, he became frightened and continued driving.
As he passed the man in the blue uniform, the fisherman alleged that the individual pointed a black handgun at the pickup and fired about six shots.
He said he felt a burning sensation in his left foot and accelerated away from the area.
After reaching a safer location, he reportedly found that both front tires were flat and later observed several bullet holes in the pickup.
Police and Scenes of Crime personnel visited the area and recovered five expended Aguila brand shell casings.
The pickup was also processed, and police reportedly observed bullet holes in the rear windshield, driver’s door and passenger door.
The matter remains under investigation.
