By Zoila Palma: On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, fisheries officers of the Belize Fisheries Department, accompanied by members of the Belize Coast Guard and supported by the Belize Audubon Society, conducted a fisheries patrol at Sandbore Caye within the Lighthouse Reef Atoll Marine Reserve.
During the patrol, officers conducted a search of a storage facility and discovered two iceboxes containing conch.
As a result of the operation, 1,086 conch was counted and subsequently seized.
An individual was charged with the offence of “Possession of conch during the closed season,” contrary to the Fisheries Resources Act and applicable regulations.
The matter is currently before the court.
The Department reminds fisherfolk, seafood traders, and members of the public of the importance of complying with fisheries laws and regulations, and encourages the reporting of suspected illegal fishing activities or other violations.
“Respecting closed seasons is essential to the sustainable management and protection of Belize’s fisheries resources, while also ensuring fairness to fisherfolk who comply with established laws and regulations,” the fisheries department said.
