Fisheries Department bans sea cucumber harvesting until July 31

By Horace Palacio: The Belize Fisheries Department has reiterated its commitment to marine conservation by instituting the annual closed season for sea cucumber fishing, set to run from February 1 to July 31, 2025. This enforcement aligns with the provisions of Statutory Instruments No. 67 of 2009 and No. 107 of 2022.

Under these regulations, the fishing, possession, purchase, sale, export, or attempt to export any species of sea cucumber is strictly prohibited during the designated period. Individuals caught violating these rules will be subject to legal prosecution under Belize’s Fisheries Regulations.

The department emphasized the ecological significance of the closure, stating, “Sea cucumbers play a crucial role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. This seasonal restriction ensures the sustainability of the species and the overall health of Belize’s marine environment.”

The Belize Fisheries Department has called upon fishers and the public to uphold these regulations, adding that community participation is vital for successful conservation efforts. The department also encourages reporting any suspicious or illegal activities related to sea cucumber harvesting.
