By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Fisheries Department has announced that the fishing season for the Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) will officially end on Friday, February 28, 2025. This closure, in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 126 of 2024, is a key part of Belize’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices.
The closed season for the Spiny Lobster will be observed from March 1 to June 30, aligning with the regional lobster regulation established by the Organization for Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector (OSPESCA). This regional alignment ensures the preservation and responsible management of the lobster population across the Caribbean.
The Fisheries Department stresses that possession of lobster during the closed season is strictly prohibited, and individuals found in violation of this regulation will face prosecution. This measure is crucial for preventing overfishing and allowing the lobster population to replenish.
Fishers are reminded to remove all lobster traps from fishing grounds during the closed season. The Fisheries Department said their officers will actively enforce the Fisheries Regulations regarding the removal of traps from the waters during this period to ensure compliance.
The Fisheries Department encourages the public to report any illegal fisheries-related activity by contacting them at 224-4552 or via email at fisheries_department@fisheries.gov.bz. Public cooperation is essential in maintaining the health and sustainability of Belize’s marine resources.
