By Aaron Humes: Approximately just under 11 percent of votes have been cast nationwide since 7 a.m. for the 2025 General Elections, a total of 21,354 of 197,018 registered voters eligible per the Elections and Boundaries Department’s unofficial tally.
Among the leading constituencies polling at this hour are the Collet Division, in which incumbent Patrick Faber is facing a strong challenge from Devin Daly and where almost 22 percent of ballots have already been cast; and the Mesopotamia Division, where Moses “Shyne” Barrow faces two candidates and almost 18 percent of votes have been cast.
Freetown, Queen’s Square and Belize Rural North have all seen better than 15 percent of votes cast, but the Stann Creek District is lagging with around 5 percent of votes cast on average between Dangriga and Stann Creek West.
Polls remain open until 6 p.m. and counting is expected to begin around 8 p.m., with 29 of 31 seats to be decided.
Voter turnout at the last general election in the shadow of COVID-19 was nearly 82 percent, but outside of consequential elections such as 1984, 1998 and 2020, it has generally hovered in the low to mid-70 percent range per Elections and Boundaries.
