By Aaron Humes: As many as ten persons are reported so far to have died following a multiple-vehicle collision at Mile 68 on the George Price Highway near San Ignacio Town overnight, with others still in critical condition in hospital.
So far six names have been confirmed as being involved and killed in the accident. They are Aimie Hernandez, Shailer Lopez, Ashley Bradley, Kaitlyn Pinelo, Jaheim Iglesias, and Roduel Parham. The six confirmed fatalities already match the single largest loss of life on the roads of Belize in history – the November 27, 2019 collision on the George Price Highway that killed four Belizean nationals and two tourists.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams reported earlier this morning that, “The accident involved a Ford Expedition SUV that was traveling [to] Benque Viejo Town from San Ignacio, carrying [four] passengers, a Toyota Corolla taxi car traveling from Benque to San Ignacio carrying [nine] passengers and a motorcycle traveling in the same direction with only its rider. Of the four passengers in the Expedition, two are critical and are admitted to the hospital and the other two received minor injuries. All [nine] passengers in the taxi and the motorcycle rider are deceased.”
Williams added, “At this time the police [are] still trying to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. This is truly a sad and tragic incident, that underscores the fact that as drivers we must exercise due care when using the highways.”
