By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 49-year-old Vernon Street resident has been fined $5,000 after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply, in connection with the discovery of 854 grams of cannabis (1.8 lbs) at his home.
Halon Anthony Goff, a car washer of Vernon Street, appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. He was jointly charged with a female identified as Kayla Casimira, who was not present in court.
Goff informed the court that Casimira was not there because she had gone into labor and was at the hospital. He also told the court that the house searched by police was his.
Without hesitation, Goff pleaded guilty to the charge. In mitigation, he told the court, “I boil it and drink it for my asthma because pills mek me dizzy. I nuh sell it. It was for me. Pills nuh work for me. I nuh like tek the pills but dah feh me.”
As a first-time drug offender, Goff was handed a non-custodial sentence. He was fined $5,000 plus a $5.00 cost of court fine, which he must pay by December 31, 2026. In default of payment, he will serve one year imprisonment.
In light of Goff’s guilty plea and acceptance of responsibility, the prosecutor withdrew the charge against Casimira, freeing her from having to return to court in relation to the matter.
According to police, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at about 11:00 a.m., police were conducting mobile patrol when they visited the home on Vernon Street on the strength of a bench warrant. At the white two-storey house, officers conducted a search for illegal drugs and firearms.
Police say Goff was present at the time and told officers he had nothing to declare. While an initial search yielded nothing incriminating, officers reportedly found cannabis residue on top of a bureau in the hall and detected a strong aroma of marijuana. Further search led to the discovery of seven large cups turned upside down. When lifted, police say they found green leafy substances suspected to be cannabis.
The substance was shown to Goff, who police say admitted ownership, reportedly stating, “That is for me. I will plea guilty for that.”
He was escorted to the police station, where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to 854 grams, leading to the trafficking charge.
