By Zoila Palma: Today, the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic reported that Belize has detected the first New World screwworm cases for wildlife in Belize.
According to the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic, in less than 24 hours, 2 cases were found in howler monkeys in Cayo.
“The injuries were too graphic to share,” the clinic noted.
The clinic urged everyone to report suspicious cases to the Belize Agricultural and Health Authority (BAHA) immediately.
The clinic urges all Belizeans to prevent this by treating any wounds on your pets.
“Please check your animals every day for wounds. The injuries caused by this flesh eating parasite are truly horrific and often fatal when left untreated,” it added.
