By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Commander of Community Policing Howell Gillett became the first Belizean police officer to be honored by Buckingham Palace for Service to the Community.

“This milestone represents the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to service and stands as one of the most significant achievements of my career in law enforcement.

My heart is filled with gratitude and humility as I receive this distinguished honor—appointment as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). This recognition reflects years of hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the communities I have been privileged to serve. For someone from Belize, this award represents a dream realized and a testament to the idea that commitment to positive change knows no borders,” Gillett expressed.

“Being granted the MBE is deeply humbling. It symbolizes the values and efforts I have dedicated my life to and serves as a reminder of the lives impacted by those efforts. This honor inspires me to continue striving for excellence in service, reinforcing my dedication to the principles of fairness, justice, and community well-being.

As I accepted the award from Her Royal Highness, I reflected on the extraordinary nature of this moment. This recognition is not only personal; it also belongs to everyone who has supported me throughout my journey. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my family, colleagues, and all who have believed in and encouraged me. This honor is as much theirs as it is mine, representing the strength and unity of the collective efforts that have defined my career,” Gillett added.

Gillett says that he has devoted his life to fostering safer, more equitable communities and advancing the principles that underpin the justice system.

Gillett says that this achievement is a reminder that our contributions can resonate beyond our shores.

“I am profoundly inspired and motivated to continue serving with integrity and to uplift others in the pursuit of a better future for Belize and beyond. This is a moment I will treasure forever, and I am committed to carrying its significance forward in all that I do,” Commander Gillett said.
