Fire spreads inside Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve in Cayo

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Owner of Maya Walk Tours and Founder of Belize Karst Habitat Conservation (BKHC), the organization responsible for managing the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve is saddened by the fires inside the Reserve.

Juan shared on social media that he is devastated by the fire that spread inside the reserve.

“I would like to explain something important to all the local farmers. When you burn and do not take care of your fire, it can destroy everything around you.  We now understand that a small farmer beside the Tapir Mountian Nature Reserve burned 1 acre of Milpa. He was not responsible, and now hundreds of acres of beautiful forest will be destroyed,” Juan said.

“Please pray for us, Belize, so we can stop this fire,” Juan added.

The Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve (TMNR) comprises 6,286 acres of pristine lowland tropical evergreen forest on limestone (karstic) soils in the Cayo District.
