By Aaron Humes: A fire erupted Tuesday afternoon at the Independence Village Police Station compound, resulting in the destruction of several motorcycles but fortunately causing no injuries to personnel or damage to the station itself.
The incident occurred when a high-tension wire fell, leading to flames engulfing approximately eight parked motorcycles. ASP Stacy Smith, staff officer with the Department, told reporters at a subsequent press briefing that while the Fire Service was called to the scene, the presence of the high-tension wire delayed their response until personnel from Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) could secure the area.
It was clarified that the destroyed motorcycles were not in active use by police officers, but rather were classified as abandoned property or items whose owners could not be identified, with some suspected to have been stolen. Investigations into what happened are underway.
