Financial Intelligence Unit alerts public of Fraudulent emails

By Zoila Palma:  The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) is alerting the public of fraudulent emails being circulated by individuals falsely claiming to represent FIU staff or using email addresses that may appear to originate from the FIU email domain.

FIU says that these fraudulent emails may include FIU’s staff names, titles, logos, signatures, or other details designed to make the communication appear legitimate. In some cases, the messages may refer to loan approvals, loans being granted, financial assistance, payments, banking details, or other financial matters or transactions.

The public is strongly advised to exercise extreme caution when receiving unexpected emails that request personal information, account credentials, banking details, payments, urgent action, or confidential documents.

The FIU notes that it does not approve or grant loans, process financial transactions, or request sensitive personal or banking information through unsolicited email communications.

If you receive one of these emails, you are urged to:

Do not reply to the message.

Do not click links or open attachments.

Do not provide passwords, personal information, banking details, or payment information.

Do not proceed with any loan, payment, or financial transaction based on the email.

Verify the message directly through official FIU contact channels.

Report the suspicious email immediately to fiuadmin@fiubelize.org

Anyone who believes they may have responded to a fraudulent email, shared personal or financial information, or completed a transaction should contact their financial institution, change any affected passwords, and report the matter to the relevant authorities.
