By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After much pressure from football fans, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) finally decided to fire Spanish Coach David Pérez, who had been at the helm of the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) since January 2022.
Prior to that, in 2021, Pérez had led the BMNT temporarily, while still serving as Verdes’ Head Coach, in the Concacaf Nations League B, losing three games and drawing one. Despite that poor performance, the FFB appointed him as the full-time head coach in 2022.
Under his tenure, the BMNT rarely won any matches and were relegated from Concacaf League B to League C. Just last month, Belize was routed 4-0 by Nicaragua in Belmopan and 3-1 by Guyana in Bridgetown, Barbados, in the World Cup Qualifiers.
“FFB terminates Contract of Senior Men’s National Team Coach David Perez,” the FFB headlined a statement it posted on social media, announcing the firing effective Friday, July 19.
“Coach Perez has demonstrated unwavering dedication during his tenure with our team, and we acknowledge his contributions to Belizean football. His commitment to player development and leadership of the Senior National Team has been commendable.”

The FFB thanked Pérez for his services and wished him the best in his future endeavors.
“We are confident that his experience and expertise will continue to positively impact the football community,” the FFB added.
“FFB remains steadfast in its commitment to the growth and success of Belizean football and will be actively pursuing the necessary steps for the vetting and appointment of a new Head Coach to guide the Senior Men’s National Team.”
Many calls have been made on the FFB to appoint a Belizean Head Coach, with Charlie Slusher being the coach most named by fans in their social media comments.
Slusher recently led Port Layola to the Premier League of Belize Championship and had already worked as assistant Head Coach of the BMNT and even functioned as interim coach some time ago.
We await word from the FFB on the announcement of a new coach who will be charged with leading the BMNT in their final two games in the World Cup Qualifiers in 2025 and returning Belize to Concacaf League B.
