By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Caribbean Elite Men’s Road Race is entering its decisive final stretch as the lead group of 12 riders powers through the John Smith Road, heading toward the George Price Highway to the Boom Road, onto Philip Goldson Highway for the championship finish in front of MIRAB Furniture Gallery.
Among the front 12 are Belize’s Oscar Quiroz, Derrick Chavarria, and Jyven Gonzalez, holding strong against regional powerhouses. Notably absent from the lead pack are 2024 champion Cory Williams of Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda’s Conor White, last year’s runner-up. Both, along with Belize’s Jaylen Briceño, are part of a chase group trailing 1:33 behind the leaders as of 3:49 p.m.
The 156-kilometer (96.9 mile) afternoon race has tested riders with a grueling three-lap circuit that winds through Ladyville, the Airport Road, John Smith Road, Western Paradise, the George Price Highway, and the Hattieville Boom Road before looping back via the Airport Junction.
Early aggression came from Guyana’s Brighton John, who launched the first attack and was joined by Belize’s Jaylen Briceño. The duo led for a significant stretch, building a three-minute gap before John dropped back and Briceño was eventually reeled in by the chase group.
At 3:05 p.m., Trinidad & Tobago initiated a fierce attack, triggering a reshuffling of the front. Belizean riders responded with force, and Oscar Quiroz emerged in a five-man breakaway alongside Liam Trepte (T&T), Christopher Morales (Puerto Rico), Brighton John (Guyana), and LE NY Benjamin Lanai (Guadeloupe).
As of 3:49 p.m., the lead group included:
Oscar Quiroz
Jyven Gonzalez
Derrick Chavarria
Liam Trepte
Jadian Neaves
Christopher Morales
Briton John
LE NY Benjamin Lanai
Steven Manuel Polanco
Rudy Alexander Germoso
Jose Alberto Dominguez
Kaden Hopkins
The peloton has thinned considerably, with several riders removed from the race. The pace remains blistering at 27 miles per hour as the leaders approach the final turn onto the Philip Goldson Highway.
With the finish line now in sight, national pride and regional rivalry are at full tilt. Belize’s hopes rest on Quiroz, Chavarria, and Gonzalez, who are riding shoulder to shoulder with the Caribbean’s finest.
