Film— “El coquí: De los taínos al cambio climático” (Tonight)

El coquí: De los taínos al cambio climático [The coqui: From the Taínos to climate change] is an ecologically grounded documentary directed by Sonia Fritz, researched and produced by biologist Rafael Joglar, and edited by David Moscoso. The film explores the history, biological importance, and threats of extinction facing Puerto Rico’s iconic amphibian in the context of the current climate crisis. Tonight, Tuesday, May 20, 2026, at 6:00pm, there will be a special screening presented by Proyecto Coquí and CIEGOS CON VISIÓN [Blind with Vision] designed for the blind community and those with disabilities. Location: Banco Popular Foundation, 4th Floor (San Juan, Puerto Rico).

CIEGOS CON VISIÓN writes, “An educational and cultural experience that invites us to reflect on our history, identity, and the impact of climate change in Puerto Rico. We will have the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Rafael Joglar, and we will offer a screening with an audio description of the documentary for the visually impaired.” [This screening is free and open to the public. Reserve a ticket at Eventbrite.]

Description: The documentary was filmed in the Carite Forest, following three biologists: Rafael Joglar, a lifelong researcher of coquí frogs at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus (UPRRP); Carlos Andrés Rodríguez, a biologist; and Paula Avila, a biologist and veterinarian. We see them searching for the coquí frogs we hear calling, holding them in their hands, measuring them, and releasing them back into the forest. In El Yunque, Rafael Joglar searches for the Coquí Duende, a species found only in that part of Puerto Rico, and in Caguana, archaeologist Reniel Rodríguez explains the connection between the representations of amphibian legs and the indigenous cosmogony that dates back six thousand years. We conclude with the topic of climate change and how it is affecting the coquí frogs; of the 17 species that once existed, three are extinct, and five more could disappear as well.
