FIFA Elite Youth Goalkeeper Coaches Workshop wraps up Thursday at FFB Stadium

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) marks the successful completion of the FIFA Elite Youth Goalkeeper Coaches Workshop today, Thursday, June 12. This specialized course, which began on Sunday, is aimed at equipping youth goalkeeper coaches with cutting-edge methodologies to nurture the next generation of talent.

The workshop has brought together 23 participants, including national team goalkeeper coaches, senior men’s and women’s national team goalkeepers, and High-Performance Program (HPP) goalkeeper coaches. Notably, 9 female participants took on the challenge, reinforcing the growing representation of women in football leadership.

World-class coaching expertise and notable attendees

Led by FIFA Goalkeeper Experts Phil Wheddon and Andris Vanins, both renowned figures in global goalkeeping development, the training has provided invaluable insights.

Wheddon, with over 25 years of experience, has coached goalkeepers at youth, collegiate, and professional levels, including the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams. He has coached in multiple World Cups and Olympic Games and is the founder of the International Goalkeeper Coaches Conference (IGCC).

Vanins, a former Latvian international goalkeeper with 100 caps, has transitioned into coaching and talent scouting. He has worked with top European clubs and is currently involved in Latvia’s national goalkeeper development. He also founded “PORTERO GKS,” an academy dedicated to training young goalkeepers.

Among the distinguished attendees are San Pedro Pirates Head Coach Ada Cordova, BMNT and Verdes goalkeeper Woodrow West, BWNT and Sagitun GIRLZ goalkeeper Jasmine Armstrong, coaches Charlie Slusher and Wilmer Garcia. Their presence reflects the significance of this initiative and the dedication of Belizean football professionals to elevating the sport.

Advancing goalkeeper training in Belize

This workshop is in line with FIFA’s global commitment to strengthening goalkeeper training across its member associations. By hosting this course, the FFB is making a valuable investment in its football program, ensuring local coaches and players refine their expertise to meet international standards.

With the final training sessions wrapping up today, the impact of this program is expected to improve goalkeeper coaching in Belize.
