By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Real Madrid advanced to the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup with a thrilling 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in a quarterfinal that ended in chaos. Goals from Gonzalo García, Fran García, and Kylian Mbappé gave Madrid the edge, but a red card, a penalty, and a last-second save from Thibaut Courtois were needed to see off a furious Dortmund comeback.
Los Blancos looked dominant in the first half. Gonzalo García opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Fran García doubled the lead ten minutes later with a thunderous strike from outside the box. Madrid controlled the tempo and looked set for a routine win.
The match exploded in stoppage time. Maximilian Beier capitalized on a defensive error to pull one back for Dortmund in the 90+2nd minute. Just two minutes later, Kylian Mbappé responded with a moment of brilliance, curling a stunning shot into the top corner to make it 3-1.
In the 90+6th minute, Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen was shown a straight red card for pulling back Serhou Guirassy inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot, and Guirassy converted the penalty in the 90+8th minute to make it 3-2.
With Dortmund throwing everything forward in the dying seconds, Thibaut Courtois made a crucial save to deny a potential equalizer, preserving Madrid’s narrow lead and sending them through to the semifinals.
