By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a landmark announcement, FIFA has revealed the hosts for the next two editions of the FIFA World Cup. The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, with special centenary celebration matches to be held in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Four years later, in 2034, the FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Saudi Arabia. This is second time a Middle East country hosts the World Cup following Qatar in 2022.
Celebrating History and Embracing the Future
The decision to host the 2030 World Cup in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain comes with a nod to history, as three centenary celebration matches will be held in South America to mark the 100th anniversary of the first FIFA World Cup, which took place in Uruguay in 1930. These three matches have been scheduled for June 8 and 9, 2030, at Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción, the Nuevo Estadio Nacional in Asunción, Monumental in Buenos Aires, and the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo where the first ever World Cup was held.
A New Era for Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia’s selection as the host for the 2034 World Cup marks a significant milestone for the country. The tournament will feature five venues and 15 stadiums, with the King Salman International Stadium in Riyadh set to host both the opening and closing ceremonies.
Unity Through Football
FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the importance of unity and positivity in today’s divided world, highlighting the World Cup as a unique catalyst for positive social change.
“These tournaments are to unite, not to divide,” Infantino said, celebrating the unity brought about by football.
