By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) officially opened the curtain on the 2025 Men’s U17 Elite Championship, igniting the nation’s passion for youth football with a goal-filled first weekend and strong regional rivalries. The championship, part of the FFB’s High-Performance Program, is set to run from June 28 through July 19, with games taking place across the country.

Designed to elevate young footballers under professional coaching standards, the tournament offers a platform for emerging stars to refine their technical abilities, tactical understanding, and mental resilience. Ten teams from Belize’s nine football districts—plus the National U15 team—are competing in round robin group stages.

Opening Week: U17 Division Highlights

Thursday, June 27 – Marion Jones Sports Complex, Belize City
A thrilling Group B opener saw Belize and Orange Walk battle to a 2–2 draw. Jacob Joseph gave Belize the lead early in the 16th minute before an own goal by Enrique Gongora Jr doubled their advantage just before halftime. Orange Walk, however, hit back with goals from James Waight (36’) and Jerrain Westby (50’), sharing the spoils.

Friday, June 28 – Norman Broaster Stadium, San Ignacio
Midsouth displayed defensive discipline and attacking flair in a 2–0 win over Cayo. Lamar Smith struck in the 16th minute, and Irisini Lopez sealed the victory in the dying moments of the match (99’).

Friday, June 28 – Carl Ramos Stadium, Dangriga
In the weekend’s most electrifying encounter, Stann Creek edged Belmopan 5–3 in an eight-goal thriller. The home side’s firepower was on full display, with goals from Bart Ellis (15’), Glen Tench (39’), Tyronell Castillo (53’), Dornel Marshall (59’), and Jervis Durant (90+3’). Belmopan stayed competitive through efforts from Jahson Standford (16’, 59’) and Jorge Ortiz (34’), but couldn’t hold off the Stann Creek surge.

Friday, June 28 – Ambergris Stadium, San Pedro Town
The National U15 team stunned hosts San Pedro with a 3–2 comeback victory. After an early lead from Jordan Glenn (22’) was erased by strikes from Anthony Jones (63’) and Francis Martinez (75’), it was Daayvion Serano’s brilliant brace (49’, 60’) that secured the win.
