By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 41-year-old father accused of burglary and theft following a family dispute was granted bail today after spending more than two nights in police custody over the New Year holiday.

Johnny Stewart appeared before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1, where he was arraigned on a charge of burglary stemming from an alleged incident at the home of his former common-law partner. Stewart pleaded not guilty, telling the court that the allegations were fabricated by his daughter’s mother.

Stewart had initially been before the court on December 31, 2025, on a theft charge involving his 18-year-old daughter. Although he first pleaded guilty to theft, the Chief Magistrate rejected the plea as equivocal after Stewart explained what transpired. He was granted bail at that time; however, police were simultaneously preparing a burglary charge, and Stewart remained in custody at the Queen Street Police Station through the New Year.

Friday’s burglary charge is based on a complaint made by his ex-common-law wife, a supervisor at Princess Casino. The woman alleged that on December 23, 2025, Stewart unlawfully entered her home without permission, causing her to fear for her safety. She further alleged that he assaulted her during the encounter and later threatened her with a knife.

Police records indicate that the couple shared a 17-year common-law relationship but have been separated for two years. She told investigators that Stewart was allowed to see their children only outside the home, either in the yard or by the roadside, and was not permitted to enter the residence.

In relation to the earlier theft allegation, his daughter reported that on December 22, 2025, her father allegedly demanded her cellphone, struck her when she refused, and forcibly removed two gold chains from her neck. Police issued medico-legal forms, but the young woman declined a medical examination.

With no objection from the prosecution, Stewart was granted bail in the sum of $1,500, plus one surety. As conditions of bail, he must report to the Raccoon Street Police Station once weekly on Mondays between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and he must remain at least 100 feet away from his daughter and her mother.

The matter is expected to continue when Stewart returns to court on a later date.
