By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man walked free from a common assault charge after his father told the court he never wanted his son prosecuted and only sought police intervention to calm him down following a violent family dispute.
Stephen Barrington Flowers Jr., also known as “Fats,” appeared before the Chief Magistrate charged with common assault upon his father, Stephen Barrington Flowers Sr., following an incident on Gabourel Lane near the Belize Red Cross.
Flowers Jr. pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, while his father told the court he did not want any further action taken against his son.
“I nuh wah nothing because I nuh wah he go dah jail,” Flowers Sr. told the court.
The father explained that he had only wanted police to intervene and take his son into custody temporarily so he could calm down, but said he never intended to press charges against him.
The dispute reportedly began after Flowers Sr. warned his son about spending time in a particular area. According to the father, he was across from the Red Cross at around 7:30 a.m. on September 21 when he saw his son and warned him not to go to the Mansion area. He alleged that when he approached Flowers Jr., his son became violent, pushed him to the ground and kicked him about the body.
Both men, however, emerged from the confrontation with visible injuries. Flowers Jr. was seen in court with a large cut to the left side of his neck, while his father had an injury to his right index finger. Both father and son admitted they had been drinking and were under the influence at the time of the altercation.
Flowers Jr. apologized to his father in court and said he should have listened to him, acknowledging that his father had only been looking out for his best interest and safety.
Flowers Jr. also complained that police had refused to sign his medico-legal form after the incident, despite him suffering injuries.
With Flowers Sr. maintaining that he wanted no court action against his son, the Chief Magistrate dismissed the common assault charge and Flowers Jr. was free to leave.
