By Horace Palacio: A chain of events on Monday night along the George Price Highway resulted in a fatal accident and multiple injuries, leaving authorities investigating the circumstances.
Police responded to an initial report of a road traffic accident (RTA) between mile 25 and 26 at approximately 8:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a grey Kia Soul SUV with extensive damages on the right-hand side of the highway heading from Belmopan toward Belize City. The vehicle, driven by 49-year-old Kelvin Reneau, reportedly lost control and overturned several times. Reneau and two passengers, Aliyah Tores, 22, and Aaisha Williams, sustained head and body injuries and were being attended to by emergency personnel at the scene.
While police were processing the scene and preparing to transport the injured from the overturned SUV, another incident occurred. A red Chevrolet Equinox, which had stopped at the scene with three occupants—Joshua Magana, Miriam Cordon, and Angel Pastrana—was struck from the rear by a white Ford Econoline van driven by Leroy Nunez. The collision caused significant injuries to the Equinox’s occupants. Tragically, Miriam Cordon succumbed to her injuries while en route to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).
Nunez was detained at the scene and is facing multiple charges, including “driving with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit,” “manslaughter by negligence,” “causing death by careless conduct,” and “driving without due care and attention.” Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
