By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a road traffic accident (RTA) that left two people dead.
On Tuesday, July 8, about 6:30 p.m., police responded to a report of an accident between mile 28 and 29 on the Philip Goldson Highway. Upon arrival, they observed a white Hino goods truck in a ditch on the left side of the highway and a red ATK Power motorcycle that was extensively damaged. Two men were also seen motionless with various injuries.
The men on the motorcycle were identified as 34-year-old Josue Solis, a Belizean construction worker, and 18-year-old Felipe Solis, a Belizean student, both of Rhaburn Ridge Village, Belize District. Both men were pronounced dead on arrival at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
Initial investigation revealed that about 6:30 p.m., 39-year-old Melvin Ashburn Harris, a Belizean truck driver of Double Head Cabbage Village, was driving the Hino goods truck going south on the Philip Goldson Highway toward Belize City when he encountered potholes on the road between mile 28 and 29. Harris allegedly maneuvered the truck in an attempt to avoid the potholes, causing the truck to collide with an oncoming motorcycle traveling in the opposite direction. Both men fell off the motorcycle and sustained head and body injuries.
