By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On February 9, 2024, 55 farmers participated in a workshop on growing Pitahaya.

The workshop was held at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station.

Dragon Fruit is a crop that is being encouraged by the Ministry of Agriculture as part of the push to practice crop diversification.

It has been shown to grow successfully, as several farmers have ventured into its production with good results.

The fruit itself offers a delicious snack, rich in vitamins and tasty to the palate.

The pulp offers various alternative; it can be frozen and has long shelf life, but most importantly makes for delicious drinks, whether by itself as a health drink or mixed with cocktails.

The Ministry noted that while our local market might be a bit limited because of the small size, the possibilities for pulp are endless as the tourism sector has stabilized and has high demand for pulp.

The Belize Marketing and Development Corporation (BMDC) has taken full advantage and buys the fruit, pulps it and supplies the tourism market.
