Press Release

With great enthusiasm, the International Regional Organization for Health in Agriculture (OIRSA), in collaboration with Resilient Rural Belize (RRB)/Ministry of Economic Transformation and the Regional Biological Control Program, highlights the significant efforts and benefits that rural farmers are gaining from utilizing high-quality beneficial insects for pest control in their fields.

One such beneficial insect, Trichogramma pretiosum, is a minute egg parasitoid wasp effective in controlling lepidopteran pests, better known as borers. Another, the green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea), serves as an excellent natural predator against various insect pests. These beneficial insects offer sustainable alternatives to chemical pesticides, reducing environmental impact and promoting safer food production.

The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) poses a significant threat to Brassica crops, including cabbage, kale, broccoli, and cauliflower. Traditionally, managing this pest has required substantial pesticide use, leading to increased production costs, potential pesticide residues in food, and adverse environmental effects. Implementing biological control methods can mitigate these issues by decreasing reliance on restricted chemical insecticides.

Under this pilot initiative, the Resilient Rural Belize project will subsidize the participation of 13 farmers: two from the Concepcion Vegetable Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd. in the Corozal District, two from Los Pequeños Agricultores y Ganaderos of Nago Bank Cooperative Society Ltd. in the Belize District, and nine from the Valley of Peace Lagoon Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd. in the Cayo District. This support aims to encourage the adoption of environmentally conscious pest management practices and the production of safe, healthy produce for our communities.
