Family of toddler diagnosed with profound hearing loss seeks support for treatment

By Zoila Palma: Three-year-old Raquel Kaitlyn Quiñones has been diagnosed with bilateral profound hearing loss, following specialist evaluations conducted in Mérida, Yucatán.

Medical tests confirmed that Raquel has no auditory response in either ear, indicating a severe level of hearing impairment that will require long-term medical and therapeutic intervention.

Currently, Raquel uses donated Phonak hearing aids; however, doctors stress that she urgently needs speech and auditory-verbal therapy to support the development of communication and language skills.

Specialists have also recommended continued rehabilitation and further evaluations to determine her suitability for a cochlear implant, which could significantly improve her ability to perceive sound.

Genetic testing suggests the hearing loss may be hereditary.

Raquel’s family is now seeking financial assistance to continue her treatment abroad, as access to specialised pediatric audiology and speech therapy services in Belize remains limited.

Those wishing to contribute to her care may donate through Atlantic Bank to the account of Roberto Carlos Quiñones, account number 2120026161.
