By Zoila Palma: Belizean Jolene Thurton, the beloved owner of Pepper’s Jamaican-Belizean Cuisine in Los Angeles, died on July 17 near her popular restaurant on West 87th Street. She was 39.
Police say Thurton was found unresponsive near her restaurant after reports of gunfire in the area.
However, her family disputes the official account, alleging she was stabbed during a personal confrontation.
Police moved her body before anyone could apply pressure to her wounds,” said cousin Isabell Requena, demanding transparency.
The official cause of death remains pending, and no suspects have been named.
Known for her flavorful oxtail, jerk chicken, and vibrant community spirit, Thurton built Pepper’s into a cultural cornerstone.
More than a chef, she was a mother, entrepreneur, and mentor, remembered for her energy and compassion.
Mourners have filled the storefront with flowers and notes.
While the family will not be accepting donations for Jolene’s funeral, a GoFundMe has been launched to support her 11-year-old son, Endon.
You can also drop off cards and donations directly at the Pepper’s Jamaican & Belizean Cuisine mailbox on Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles.
As investigations continue, Thurton’s family urges witnesses to come forward.
Pepper’s remains temporarily closed—a powerful symbol of a life and legacy gone too soon.
