By Breaking Belize News Staff: The family of an elderly Santa Elena woman is calling for justice after she was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in the Hillview area on Friday night.
According to reports, the 55-year-old woman was riding her bicycle while wearing a reflective safety vest when she was struck by a vehicle. She sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where she remains under medical care.
Reports indicate that the driver, a Hillview resident, allegedly fled the scene following the collision but was later detained after police visited the individual’s home.
It is further alleged that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and had a child inside the vehicle. The driver was reportedly granted police bail on Sunday.
The victim is described as a well-known and hardworking Christian woman who earns a living caring for an elderly resident.
Family members say she always wore a reflective vest when riding her bicycle at night to improve her visibility to motorists.
They are now appealing for justice, appropriate charges to be brought against the driver, and assistance in covering the victim’s mounting medical expenses.
Relatives also say the driver has not reached out to offer support since the incident.
As of today, Santa Elena police had not issued an official statement on the hit-and-run investigation.
