Facing deportation? U.S. now pays Belizeans $1,000 to leave voluntarily

By Horace Palacio: Belizeans living in the United States without proper documentation are being urged to pay close attention to a new initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that offers cash assistance to undocumented migrants who choose to leave the country voluntarily.

As part of a strategy to reduce immigration enforcement actions by ICE, the U.S. government is now offering a $1,000 travel stipend to individuals who opt to self-deport using the CBP One mobile application. This program, which reflects the Trump administration’s push for voluntary departures over forced removals, is seen as a softer approach to managing the country’s undocumented population.

According to DHS, migrants must register their departure via the CBP One app to qualify. Once approved, they will be provided travel assistance to return to their home country—including Belize.

While some immigrant advocacy groups see the move as a more humane alternative to detention, others view it as part of a broader campaign to pressure migrants to leave amid tightening immigration policies.

It is unknown how many Belizeans currently in the U.S. without legal status may take advantage of the program, but with rising concerns about deportations, this offer could appeal to those considering a return home under less stressful conditions.

Belizean officials and diaspora organizations are advised to stay updated as more information becomes available.
