By Zoila Palma: Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) noted that total domestic exports for May 2025 rose to $45.7 million, an increase of 11.1% or $4.6 million compared to the $41.2 million recorded in May 2024.
The growth was driven by strong performances in several key export categories.
Molasses led the surge, jumping from $0.01 million in May 2024 to $3 million in 2025.
Banana exports climbed by $1.8 million, reaching $9.4 million, while citrus products, including orange concentrate and orange oil, also saw a $1.8 million boost, totaling $5.2 million for the month.
Sugar exports increased by $1.2 million to $19.3 million, despite a drop in global sugar prices.
Additionally, red kidney beans, which had no recorded exports last May, returned to the market with $1.1 million in sales.
However, the overall increase was partially offset by declines in other areas.
Cattle exports dropped to zero from $1.3 million in May 2024, and marine products, particularly lobster, fell by $0.7 million to $1.3 million. Animal feed exports also declined by $0.5 million, totaling $1.1 million.
Despite these setbacks, the positive momentum in key agricultural exports contributed to a strong month for Belize’s trade sector.
