“Multiple Experiences: Contemporary views from The Caribbean” encompasses three solo exhibitions by artists Nelson Gutiérrez, Elsa María Meléndez, and Charo Oquet at Edge Zones Center for Contemporary Art (3317 NW 7th Avenue, Miami, Florida). On view from November 18, 2023, to January 6, 2024, Edge Zones will offer a brunch reception for “Multiple Experiences” on Sunday, December 3, 2023, from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

Description: Edge Zones is pleased to present three solo exhibitions by artists Nelson Gutierrez, Elsa María Meléndez and Charo Oquet.

In addition to Gutierrez’ exhibition, Edge Zones Art Center also presents solo exhibitions by Elsa María Meléndez and Charo Oquet. Gutierrez’s work delves into the theme of forced displacement and global migration, using tridimensional cutout drawings and interplay of light and shadows to depict walking individuals and unrecognizable crowds. The concept of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” is utilized to provoke reflection on belief versus knowledge and the pursuit of enlightenment.

Meléndez, on the other hand, combines various artistic techniques such as textiles, embroidery, printmaking, and synthetic materials to create iconography that challenges societal norms regarding women’s bodies and sexuality. Her work engages with the social and cultural idiosyncrasies of her environment, sparking debates on tragedy, comedy, innocence, and malice.

Oquet’s artwork invites contemplation of the interplay between spirituality, art, and the modern world. The exhibition explores the significance of rituals and neo-shamanism, creating a space where different cultures and histories converge. Through immersive encounters, visitors are encouraged to engage deeply with the artworks and embark on a transformative journey.

These three solo exhibitions at Edge Zones offer visitors a rich and diverse range of artistic experiences, inviting them to explore contemporary views and engage with the interwoven tapestry of cultures, histories, and spirituality.
