Exhibition— “Víctor Vázquez: Litófono”

Víctor Vázquez’s latest exhibition, “Litófono” [Lithophone] — organized by art historian and curator Laura Bravo López — has been described as “an experience where form, sound, and space engage in dialogue.” The exhibition will open at Museo y Centro de Estudios Humanísticos Dra. Josefina Camacho de la Nuez [Dr. Josefina Camacho de la Nuez Museum and Center for Humanistic Studies] at Ana G. Méndez University, in Gurabo, Puerto Rico, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 6:30pm.

Here are brief, translated excerpts from Dr. Bravo’s catalog essay:

[. . .] On the floor of the museum gallery where his current exhibition is on display, Víctor Vázquez has meticulously and strategically placed a collection of stones upon which rest flutes made of bamboo cane. In this kind of static dance, the aerophones lend the rocks a broader meaning, revealing to the viewer the relationship between the senses, [in particular] hearing and touch. Thus, the artist offers the first hint of the project’s title, Litófono [Lithophone], which lends its name to this installation of nearly twenty flutes with their stone counterparts and to the exhibition as a whole. Although, etymologically, the title alludes to the sound the stone generates, the artist subtly hides another fundamental key to the interpretation of his project: the word “canto” [song], which is inscribed on one of them.

[. . .] To communicate with the dead, to preserve memory, and to acknowledge the past, in this project, Víctor Vázquez urges us to listen attentively to the voice of each object in the museum space. If communication is severed, if we turn off our hearing and disconnect our sight, we break our capacity to identify beauty in the uncertain and the strange. If we strive to hear the imperceptible sound of the rocks, if we try to appreciate the song of the stones, we will be closer to perceiving that music that originates from the celestial spheres and, ultimately, to understanding our own place in nature.
