Exhibition— “Victor Anicet: Opacité & transparence”

173

“Opacité & transparence” [Opacity & Transparency], a new solo exhibition by Martinican artist Victor Anicet, will open on Friday, August 30, and will remain on view through October 27, 2024, at Fondation Clément (Carrée/Cuverie), located at Habitation Clément, Le François, Martinique. The exhibition is described as a plunge into the history and art of Martinique: “Discover the works of Victor Anicet, figures from his personal history and that of Martinique. Through the sea, the rubber tree, and the caravel, he explores identity and the past.” Curator Dominique Brebion writes:

Victor Anicet’s creations tell his intimate story. This history and the socio-political context of the environment that generated them are intertwined. Thus, it is the history of Martinique that unfolds, from the times of “the Colony” to departmentalization.

In the beginning, there is the sea.

The rubber tree is the anguish of a fisherman’s son.

The Caravelle is also the vision of the vanquished, the white sail of the first settlers in the distance.

The pre-Columbian object is the memory of archaeological excavations with Father Pinchon,

It is also the quest for the history and aesthetics of the first peoples within the Fwomajé group.

The chouval candy is the enticing scent of a cake baking at the height of the shortages of the 1940s,

It is also the tradition of candy or pistachio sellers in their carts.

Thus, creation as a whole is developed in layers while, at the same time, the layers become the principle of the composition of certain particular works, such as the Restitution trays or the ceramics dubbed Strata by the artist.

And always the sign—from the clean, refined, minimalist cut of the Black and White Signs, the Carcans, and the Ferrements to the baroque and colorful profusion of the Amerindian Invocations and the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre.

In his life, in his work, Anicet is above all a storyteller.

All this is nevertheless part of a aesthetic contemporaneity through the decompartmentalization of practices, experimentation, quotation, and remix.
