Description: The American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora presents Selgas: Essential, a museum survey exhibition of New York City-based Cuban American artist Jesus “Cepp” Selgas. [. . .]
A 28-year-old Selgas arrived at American shores via the Mariel boatlift in 1980, and immediately after, settled in New York City, where he divided his time between creating art and working as a graphic designer. According to Jesus Rosado, historian and co-curator of the exhibition, Selgas is one of the prominent representatives of the group of artists from the Mariel Generation who helped consolidate Cuban presence on the American cultural scene since the 1980s.
This exhibition presents works that span over 40 years of his artistic career. Selgas had trained in painting under the mentorship of Antonia Eiriz at the School of Fine Arts – Cubanacan, and at the National School of Design, both in Havana. In New York, he attended the Parsons School of Design for further studies in art and photography.
Selgas: Essential contains works from different series and periods that have occupied the artist since the 1980’s most of which are centered around the experience of being a Cuban exile.
As described by scholar Gustavo Valdes, one of the exhibit’s curators: “Selgas is a painter of ideas, a raconteur of his memory, and our collective memory. Selgas is a cataloger and archivist of life experiences. Selgas is a celebrator of the art of all time, an heir to all previous and simultaneous creation”.
