Exhibition— iliana emilia García & Scherezade García: “Landed”

130

We’re sorry to have missed this earlier this summer, but those of you in (or traveling to) the New York area, still have until Saturday, September 6, 2025, to see “Landed”—an exhibition featuring sculptures, works on paper, and a new installation by the Dominican-born, New York-based sisters iliana emilia García and Scherezade García at Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary (located at 47 East 64th Street, New York, NY).

Description: Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary (HM&C) is pleased to announce Landed, an exhibition of works by Dominican-born, New York-based sisters iliana emilia García and Scherezade García. Opening Thursday, June 5th, a reception with the artists will be held at the gallery from 5:00-8:00pm. An online Study Room at Hutchinsonmodern.com will accompany the show, offering an in-depth exploration of the García sisters’ artistic practices.

Landed is the first exhibition of iliana emilia and Scherezade at HM&C. The show will feature sculptures and works on paper, ranging from 1999-2025, as well as a new installation La salita (2025)—the first artwork that they collaboratively produced—drawing from memories of a cherished creative space that they shared in childhood.

Landed brings viewers into a place of evocative encounters generated by the confluence of peoples and ideas, both past and present. iliana emilia and Scherezade employ distinct symbolic vocabularies, palettes, and mediums; yet their commonalities are rich and binding. They share family, transnational and multicultural experiences, geographies, and a preoccupation with the way in which personal storytelling, visual memory, and traditionalist history can coalesce to influence and even decolonize the future. Their unique approaches to these topics generate works that are dynamic and adaptable.

iliana emilia’s work can be found in the collections of prominent institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; El Museo del Barrio, New York; and the Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo. Scherezade’s work can be found in the collections of institutions including the Pérez Art Museum Miami; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; and El Museo del Barrio, New York.
