Description: “Gaza, Gasa, Gauze” [Keep in mind that “gasa” means “gauze” in Spanish.]
Three nouns: Gaza, gasa, gauze. A territory, a bandage, and its translation into English, the supposed lingua franca these days. Easy to slip, with the help of glue, from one to the other on canvas, felt, or carpet, seeking to signify that which defies reason and condemns piety. Because it was in Gaza, centuries ago, that gauze was first woven.
To delve into Gaza, we boarded flying carpets from One Thousand and One Nights. We landed on sewing patterns bearing the ironic Simplicity brand, designed to make children’s clothing, now for the afterlife. With strips of gauze, we tried to reconstruct villages and inhabitants of what is now a desert.
Having finished the task, overwhelmed by the darkness, we opted for a respite of light and color, the hope of recovering nature after the disaster. That’s why we rescued the gauze from Gaza to open a window to the tropics and enjoy it. While we still can.
May these bandages reveal evil, and may art help heal the wound.
